Access and Transport
The proposed site is very close to the town centre and a short walk from the Market Place. Enhancements to footways, crossings of Gloucester Street, existing paths and improved signage would encourage use of the wider town centre by those parking and shopping at the new store. The District Council’s consultation leaflet suggests there are 2 options for access, off Gloucester Street and off Lechlade Road. Following discussion with Oxfordshire County Council (Highway Authority and owner of the land fronting Lechlade Road), it has been agreed that there is no need for an access from this direction.

The new store would be accessed by a direct link from the existing Gloucester Street car park access road – no new road is needed, although the existing access road would require localised widening.

The design of the access and modifications to the access road will need to provide for (and potentially improve) the safe access to the Junior School via the town park gate.

Transport consultants, i-Transport, have been appointed to advise the Faringdon House Estate on transport and highways matters. The access road, as proposed, would be suitable for the level of traffic generated by the use of the Gloucester Street car park, the shoppers using the store, together with the limited number of delivery vehicles (3 – 4 a day estimated, which would be timed to arrive outside of the school starting and finishing times). It is acknowledged that the character of Faringdon’s streets will need to be respected by the proposal, and therefore further discussions will be held regarding the size of delivery vehicles that would be used, and the times of day when they would serve the site.
