Faringdon House Estate has appointed Barton Willmore, leading national planning and design advisers to advise the Estate and to assist in the debate regarding the future of the Town Centre
and the site. Barton Willmore have carried out retail analysis which confirms the need to bring back significant expenditure on food arising in Faringdon but currently being spent outside the town. This supports the view expressed by the District Council and others that a foodstore with some 1,400 sq m (15,000 sq ft) sales area will be supportable in the town. The illustrative scheme shows:
• A foodstore of up to 25,000 sq ft gross (15,000 sq ft net);
• Car parking for up to 110 cars – in addition to the existing Gloucester Street car park;
• Access for delivery vehicles with sufficient space to the rear of the store for hgvs to turn around in the service yard
The Estate’s ownership of the site provides the opportunity for it to stipulate the terms for use of the car park. It is proposed that in common with practice at foodstores in other towns, the car park would be free to shoppers for up to 2 hours.
